IN THE CAB of his truck, with both windows rolled halfway down, he sank back against the seat, with Day’s fingers woven in his. He didn’t bother to say he was fine. “This has never happened before.”

She was silent.

Nick was grateful. Day never said stupid things. Never said, If you love something set it free… When Day spoke, they were heart words. I want to have your babies. Yours, no one else’s.

He whispered, “You’re the best.”

“You ought to know.”

Sassy tonight. It was that cowgirl costume. He moved to look into her eyes, to liberate a lock of blond hair caught in the blue paint on her cheek.

Day’s fingers curled up, tensing, then relaxed. Don’t look at me that way, Nick. I don’t know what it means.

Nick couldn’t stop looking. Tonight she’d seen him sweating, cramping, reduced by his humanity. It reminded him that he’d told her things after Sam died, that she knew other things. She loved him, who he really was. Only with Day was it okay to be filthy, gross inside.

He tried not to think about the pots.

Or about Kelly.

Edging back toward his door, Nick guided her down on the bench seat, and her chaps slipped away as she swung her legs over the stick shift and under the steering wheel. She grasped his shoulders, and he felt her trying to draw him with her, to lie on top of her. He did, gently.

“Day.” He kissed her. Blue paint against his face. Their mouths opened together. Her arms strangled his neck, holding as tight as a woman’s arms could, and Nick put his hand on her crotch.

“Nick…” She gave a small whimper.

He stroked her, his mind out of order. No thoughts. “Baby…” They were both so excited. Stifled words became a sound in his mouth. As his tongue felt hers, she strained under him, pressing up into his hand. If he slipped his fingers into her bikini bottoms, she’d be wet.

“Day…” He buried his face in her hair, squeezing his eyes shut, wanting to say the words that would make them both unravel.

I love you.

His hand felt like lead when he tried to move it to her thigh. His fingers dragged in paint.

“Don’t stop,” she whispered.

He tugged a string on her bikini bottoms and felt her unbuttoning his fly. Then touching him as he was her. Guiding his penis against her wetness. Almost silent, they teased each other, faces pressed close as they lay on the truck seat, knees bent to fit, chaps against blue jeans, breathing the shallow breaths of passion.

Love. Lying against her like that, it surrounded him. Day was the river spirit who’d come from the water before he was a man. She’d helped teach him to read. Touching her body that was too pretty for him, he had learned tenderness.

He pressed his mouth to hers again, caressing her tongue, giving her his love, giving her the most he had, more than he ever gave anyone.

Day felt it all, felt his soul coming into hers, surrounding hers.
